Gifted Vehicle Between you & an Immediate Family Member in Maryland

This is when a Vehicle is given as a gift from Father/mother to a child or Step-daughter or from Spouse to spouse etc. Title transfer between the above category are excise tax & Maryland Safety Inspection Exempt.

Note: if the last names are different, proof of relationship is required.

Documents accepted:

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Marriage Certificate
  3. Adoption Papers
  4. Court –Order Documents

Required Documents for Registration:

  1. Maryland Title-Properly Assigned by the giver & Receiver
  2. Application for Certification of Title on the reverse side of the title (Form VR-005)
  3. Fill out Assignment Of Ownership-On the Back of Maryland title
  4. Lien Release-If Any. If there is a lien, a letter from the lien holder on a letterhead is required authorizing the change of ownership.
  5. Gift Certification(Form VR 103)Completed & signed by Giver & Receiver-( Go to Forms on Website to download it & have the Giver sign it before coming here or Come with him/her )
  6. Proof of Relationship– if last names are different, provide Birth Certificate or Marriage Certificate or  Adoption Papers or Court –Order Documents…. etc. 
  7. Maryland Safety Inspection is required if you are not transferring the tags
  8. Insurance Coverage.
  9. Driver’s License
  10. Registration Card if transferring.

  

Gifted Vehicle Between Aunt/Uncle to a Niece or Nephew

An Aunt/Uncle giving the vehicle as a gift must be at least 65yrs of age or older. If the giver is younger than 65yrs; it’s no longer considered a gift.

Proof of age and relationship must be attached alongside with Forms VR-103 & VR-299.

Note: Maryland Safety inspection is required for this type of gift.

  5. Proof of Relationship–  provide Birth Certificate or  Marriage Certificate or Adoption Papers…… Note: Form VR-299 must be accompanied to explain the relationship between both parties-(Download from website, under forms)
  6. Maryland Safety Inspection
  7. Insurance Coverage.
  8. Driver’s License.
  9. Registration Card if transferring.

 

 Note: If there is no Maryland Safety Inspection, a 30 day temporary Tag May be obtained             at this time.
